Sunday 8th March sees the welcome return of International Women’s Day. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the social, economic, political and cultural achievements of women across the world and it’s been an annual fixture since 1911. More importantly perhaps is the way by which IWD highlights the importance of gender equality and what we can all do to create a world and workplace more equal.
In general, the catering industry is in a healthy state, with 2018 Office for National Statistics figures revealing that women employed in kitchen and catering assistant roles were paid on average 2.2% more than their male counterparts, however 62% of these roles were filled by women.
At a more senior level, we are pleased to say that across our business, 47% of catering and chef manager roles are staffed by females, and at operational level, our gender split is 50/50. We’re also proud to count three women as part of our senior management team. Our Blue Apple apprenticeship scheme is also helping to develop the next generation of talent, with half of our apprentices being female and beginning to progress into more senior and supervisory roles. If our team are committed, hard-working and passionate about food, the opportunity to build a rewarding career is waiting. We’re committed to promoting Blue Apple and the wider catering and hospitality industry as a fantastic place to build a career, regardless of gender.
At our 2019 Awards Dinner, female team members picked up the awards for Manager of the Year and Chef of the Year and our Rising Star was picked up by Magda Wasag, who joined the business as a deli bar assistant and has risen to manage her own contract, whilst still looking to improve and develop. We were also delighted when our Sales and Marketing Director, Sarah Prentice was awarded Salesperson of the Year at the Foodservice Cateys in October 2019.
We recognise that the entire hospitality industry still has work to do to improve equality. At Blue Apple we are committed to continuing our work to developing the women in our business and creating an equal workplace where careers can thrive,
