Thursday evening (20 Sept) saw the return of the prestigious Association of Catering Excellence (ACE) Ready Steady Cook competition to the East Wintergarden at London’s Canary Wharf. Now in its twentieth year, the competition continues to shine a light on young talent within the foodservice sector, and this year’s Young Star Award was given to our very own Felicia Amofah.
A total of 14 two-person teams took part, who had just thirty minutes to plan and prepare a main course and dessert in front of a live audience of over 250, with the rules stating that one of the pair must be under 25. Felicia, just seven months into her catering career with Blue Apple, having followed her Chef-Manager father into the business, had only recently turned 20 when her hot chocolate sponge, carefully flavoured with pomegranate, honey, raspberry and orange, wowed the judges.
Felicia commented: “I was so excited to take part in the competition and that Peter (Phillips, Chef Manager at Blue Apple) was there as my partner to support me and keep me focused. It was my first competition, so I had no idea what to expect, but when I saw the ingredients I had to work with I knew straight away I wanted to cook a chocolate dessert. The standard of young chefs around me was so high and to be honest I was shocked when they called my name for the Young Star Award. I was just there to do my best and am so pleased I could make Blue Apple proud.”
Ruston Toms, Founding Director at Blue Apple Contract Catering, commented: “We are over the moon that Felicia has been recognised at such a prestigious event and at such an early point in her career as well. She has shown a great deal of promise from day one at Blue Apple and we are very proud of her indeed. Our commitment to developing young talent is absolutely in line with what ACE is looking to achieve with the Ready Steady Cook Competition, and Felicia embodies the passion and dedication we just love to see in our staff, both young and… well, not so young!”
